Overview

The Shear Operator is responsible for operating computer numerical control (CNC) or manual shear machines to precisely cut metal sheets and plates according to specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Set up shear cutting systems according to job specifications, including adjusting blade gaps, back gauges, hold-down pressure, and adjusting settings, and loading materials such as metal sheets or plates.
  • Input program codes or use computer software to program CNC controls for shearing operations, specifying parameters such as cutting length, gauge thickness, and material type.
  • Load and unload materials onto the shear table, positioning them accurately for cutting, and adjust material alignment as needed to ensure precise results.
  • Operate shear cutting systems to perform precise cutting operations on metal components, following programmed instructions and monitoring the production to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Inspect finished parts for accuracy, dimensional tolerance, and surface quality, using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges, and make adjustments as necessary to meet specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with machine operation, tooling (blades/gauges), or programming, such as equipment malfunctions, dull blades, or material defects, and implement corrective actions to resolve problems and minimize downtime.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), operating machinery safely, and maintaining a clean and organized work area to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Record production data, including job setup information, machine settings, production quantities, and quality inspection results, in logbooks or electronic systems for documentation and traceability purposes.
