Position Details:

Walinga USA in Wayland, Michigan is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Accountant - Tax & Compliance to join our finance team. This critical role will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely tax compliance across our North American operations, with a particular emphasis on US state and local tax requirements, Canadian provincial VAT (GST/HST/PST/QST) compliance, and tariff compliance for cross-border shipments between Canada and the United States. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of tax regulations, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to proactively identify and mitigate compliance risks.

Starting salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

  • US State & Local Tax Compliance:
  • Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns, ensuring accurate reporting and timely remittance.
  • Manage and respond to state and local tax notices and audits.
  • Research and interpret state tax laws and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance, including nexus analysis and taxability of products/services.
  • Assist with property tax compliance and reporting as needed.
  • Monitor legislative changes and their potential impact on the company's US state tax obligations.
  • North American Tariff Compliance:
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with customs regulations and tariff classifications for goods shipped between Canada and the United States.
  • Work closely with logistics, supply chain, and external customs brokers to ensure accurate valuation, classification, and country of origin declarations.
  • Monitor and research changes in trade agreements (e.g., USMCA) and their impact on import/export duties.
  • Canadian Provincial VAT (GST/HST/PST/QST) Compliance:
  • Assist in the preparing and filing Canadian GST/HST, PST (e.g., British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba), and QST returns.
  • Ensure proper application of input tax credits (ITCs) and input tax refunds (ITRs).
  • General Tax & Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate tax records and documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Sales, Operations, Legal) to provide tax guidance and ensure compliance in various business activities.
  • Participate in special tax projects and initiatives as required.
  • Develop and implement internal controls to ensure tax compliance and mitigate risks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in a tax role, with a strong focus on North American tax compliance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in US multi-state sales & use tax regulations and compliance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain tax concepts.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
